The Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) marked its Golden Jubilee on March 12, 2024, with a celebratory event in Belagavi. Public Works Minister Satish Jarkiholi inaugurated the festivities at CPED ground, highlighting the importance of environmental protection and pollution control. KSPCB Chairman PM Narendra Swamy also attended, emphasizing the board’s ongoing commitment to addressing pollution in the region.

During the event, Swamy urged for a focused approach to recycling by utilizing by-products from local sugar factories, specifically sugarcane bagasse and molasses. He pointed out that chemical-laden water and emissions from industries contribute significantly to water and air pollution in Belagavi district. “Sugarcane bagasse is an alternative fuel. This makes it possible to reduce the use of coal,” he stated, pointing to innovative uses like producing single-use plates and generating electricity from bagasse and spent wash waste.

The KSPCB is currently monitoring water quality by collecting and analyzing samples from various locations along the Malaprabha, Ghataprabha, and Krishna Rivers, with the Central Pollution Control Board identifying the Malaprabha and Krishna as polluted. An action plan has been formulated to address these concerns, according to Swamy.

Scientific disposal of solid waste also emerged as a critical topic during the celebrations. With the volume of solid waste increasing daily, Swamy stressed the need for systematic disposal methods and public cooperation. “Every day, lakhs of milk packets are being thrown into the ground. This is having a negative impact on the environment,” he noted.

The event paid homage to the legacy of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, who established pollution control boards in 1974. The celebration aims to raise awareness about environmental issues and promote sustainable practices across the state.

Awareness Campaigns and Community Engagement

Jarkiholi highlighted the significance of local awareness initiatives, stating that programs are being organized in every district to engage the younger generation. He expressed joy over the campaign’s motto: “50 years of dedication, 31 districts, 1 goal—Pollution-free Karnataka.”

He encouraged the KSPCB to extend its outreach to the taluk level and recognize individuals and organizations contributing positively to environmental efforts. MLA Asif Sait reinforced this message, calling for increased public understanding of waste segregation.

Following the program, awards were presented to local environmental advocates. Jarkiholi, Swamy, and Sait honored recipients of the Indira Priyadarshini Award for their exceptional work in environmental protection. Among the honorees were municipal workers, headmasters of eco-friendly schools, and various organizations committed to fostering sustainable practices.

The event also featured participation from notable figures including MLC Channaraj Hattiholi, regional commissioner Janaki KM, and deputy commissioner Mohammed Roshan, all of whom underscored the importance of collective efforts in the ongoing fight against pollution.

As the KSPCB embarks on its next chapter, the emphasis on community involvement and innovative solutions will be essential in achieving a cleaner, more sustainable environment for future generations.
