Karnataka Launches Biodiesel Pumps to Boost Eco-Friendly Fuel
In a significant advancement for renewable energy, the Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board has announced plans to establish biodiesel pumps at the taluk level across the state. This initiative, set to partner with private companies, aims to enhance the availability and market presence of biodiesel, a cleaner fuel alternative derived from eco-friendly agricultural products such as cooking oil and oil seeds.
The private companies will be responsible for operating these biodiesel pumps. The board will assist them in navigating the necessary government permissions and marketing strategies. Despite a growing interest, over 70 applications from various companies to set up these pumps have remained pending due to a lack of clear procedural guidelines. The recent introduction of the “Karnataka State Biodiesel (B-100) Blending with High-Speed Diesel for Transportation Purposes (Licensing) Order, 2025,” is expected to streamline this process, allowing for the establishment of new fuel outlets.
Economic Impact and Consumer Confidence
According to S E Sudheendra, chairman of the Karnataka State Bioenergy Development Board, there is a substantial stock of biodiesel ready for market. “We want more companies to come forward and set up pumps. Although there are procedural challenges, the recent notification addresses these issues,” he stated.
The price of biodiesel is projected to be lower than conventional diesel by at least ₹5 per litre. Sudheendra highlighted that if more pumps are operational, prices could potentially decrease even further.
Concerns have been raised by some citizens regarding the impact of biodiesel on vehicle engines and fuel efficiency. In response, Bharath Subramaniam, advisor to the chairman, reassured the public that only B100 biodiesel, which has been internationally tested and approved for automotive use, will be available at these pumps. “People can opt for it without any fear,” he emphasized.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite the existing stock of biodiesel in Karnataka, much of it is currently sold to oil companies for blending with conventional diesel. An industry insider remarked that while these companies benefit from blending, they often do not pass on cost savings to consumers. “It is important to break this cycle and allow producers to sell biodiesel directly to the public,” the source explained.
Biodiesel presents a cleaner fuel option, contributing to reduced pollution levels and lessening dependence on oil imports. The Union government has supported the push for biodiesel use as part of its broader energy strategy. Karnataka was among the first states to adopt a bioenergy policy back in 2007-08, which served as a reference point for the national policy introduced in 2017.
The establishment of biodiesel pumps is expected to significantly enhance the state’s bioenergy landscape, providing a sustainable and economically viable alternative for consumers while contributing to environmental goals.
