Priyank Kharge Defends Constitution Amid BJP Criticism
Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge strongly criticized BJP MP Sambit Patra for his remarks about Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge regarding the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). The exchange highlights ongoing tensions between the two major political parties in India.
During a press conference on March 16, 2024, Priyank Kharge accused Patra of defending an organization that he claims rejects the Indian Constitution. He emphasized that the Congress party upholds the Constitution and its values, stating, “How can we accept an organization that rejected the Constitution and wanted Manusmriti to be adopted instead?”
The Minister raised questions about the funding and registration status of the RSS. He challenged the legitimacy of its activities, asking, “Why are they not registered? Where are they getting their money from?” He expressed concern over the broadcasting of RSS leader Mohan Bhagwat’s speeches from public institutions and called for a ban on such activities within government premises.
This rebuttal from Priyank Kharge came in response to Patra’s earlier comments, in which the BJP leader accused Mallikarjun Kharge of using language reminiscent of extremist organizations. Patra stated that the Congress President’s words echoed those of the Popular Front of India (PFI) and the Muslim League, claiming these groups oppose the RSS, which aims to unify the nation.
The political sparring reflects a broader ideological conflict between the BJP and Congress, particularly regarding the RSS, an organization that has frequently been a focal point in national debates on governance and ideology.
In a related context, Priyank Kharge has urged Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to prevent RSS activities within state-run schools, colleges, and temples, asserting that the organization promotes a philosophy counter to the Constitution and “brainwashes young minds.”
On the other side, Dattatreya Hosabale, the General Secretary of the RSS, dismissed calls for a ban on the organization. He asserted that there must be a valid reason for such an action, highlighting that the RSS is involved in nation-building efforts. “What will be gained by banning an RSS that is engaged in nation-building? The public has already accepted the RSS,” he stated during a press conference in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh.
The RSS recently celebrated its centenary, having been founded in 1925 by Keshav Baliram Hedgewar. The organization has faced scrutiny throughout its history, including a temporary ban following the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi in 1948. The ban was lifted after an investigation cleared the RSS of direct involvement in the assassination.
As political tensions continue to rise, both parties remain committed to their respective ideologies, with the RSS at the center of the ongoing discourse.
