Venezuela has announced that it has successfully thwarted an alleged plot involving the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) aimed at attacking a United States warship stationed in Trinidad. Foreign Minister Yvan Gil disclosed this information in a statement on March 18, 2024, indicating that the Venezuelan government had informed Trinidadian authorities about the purported operation.

The announcement follows Venezuela’s claim of arresting individuals it labels as mercenaries with links to the CIA. Minister Gil asserted, “On our territory, a criminal cell financed by the CIA and linked to this covert operation is being dismantled.” He further alleged that the objective of the purported plot was to stage an attack on a US warship, subsequently blaming the Venezuelan government to justify potential military action against the country.

Tensions between Venezuela and the United States have escalated recently, particularly following remarks from former US President Donald Trump. Trump has stated his approval for covert actions in Venezuela and is exploring options for operations on Venezuelan soil. This comes against the backdrop of a significant US naval deployment in the Caribbean, which has reportedly included ten attacks on vessels identified by Washington as involved in drug trafficking, resulting in the deaths of 43 individuals.

The current US naval presence features seven warships, including the world’s largest aircraft carrier, the Gerald R. Ford. Notably, the USS Gravely, a guided missile destroyer, arrived in Trinidad’s capital, Port of Spain, on March 17, 2024, for a four-day visit that includes joint training exercises with local defense forces. Venezuelan officials have condemned this naval deployment as a provocation, heightening existing tensions.

Minister Gil emphasized the seriousness of the alleged plot, stating that he alerted Trinidad about the supposed plan “to attack a US warship stationed on that island and then blame Venezuela, so as to justify aggression against our country.” This accusation reflects ongoing concerns in Caracas regarding perceived threats from the United States, particularly in light of the recent military activities in the region.

The situation underscores a volatile geopolitical landscape, with significant implications for both Venezuela and its Caribbean neighbors. As the international community watches closely, the potential for further escalation remains a pressing concern.
