Athens Man in Nazi Uniform Allegedly Assaults Woman Outside Pub
A disturbing incident unfolded in downtown Athens, Georgia, on October 24, 2023, when a man dressed in a Nazi uniform allegedly assaulted a woman outside Cutter’s Pub. The individual, identified as Kenneth Leland Morgan, was captured in a widely circulated video that shows him engaged in a confrontation with a woman, later identified as Grace Lang. The altercation reportedly occurred shortly after 02:00 local time, just days before Halloween.
The video depicts Morgan, wearing a Nazi uniform complete with a red armband bearing a swastika. Witnesses claim he was pushed out of the bar by Lang and confronted by others nearby. During the exchange, Morgan is seen striking Lang across the face after she attempted to intervene, reaching for his armband. According to police records, he has been charged with aggravated assault and simple battery, with a bond set at $1,500.
Lang recounted the events to the University of Georgia’s student newspaper, The Red & Black. She stated that the confrontation began when a Jewish friend of hers noticed the armband and engaged Morgan in a heated argument. Lang intervened, trying to remove the armband, which she described as the defining element of Morgan’s costume. She claims that during the struggle, Morgan hit her with a “large glass pitcher,” although she noted that the bar did not serve drinks in glass pitchers.
“I was immediately disoriented and don’t remember him continuing to assault me,” Lang explained, highlighting the traumatic nature of the encounter.
Community Response and Official Statements
The incident has generated significant backlash from local organizations. The Young Democrats of UGA and the ACC issued a statement condemning Morgan’s actions. They expressed deep concern over the display of antisemitic hate and violence, stating, “Nazis and antisemites like Lee have no place in our community.” They urged others to denounce such behavior and hoped that Morgan’s felony charge would serve as a deterrent.
The owner of Cutter’s Pub clarified that Morgan had not been permitted entry into the establishment. In a statement to The Red & Black, he emphasized the bar’s commitment to customer safety, stating, “We pride ourselves on being a diverse crowd and serving everyone who walks through the door with respect.”
Social media reactions have been mixed. While many expressed outrage, some users voiced support for Morgan’s actions. Comments ranged from admiration for his choice of costume to criticism of Lang’s response, suggesting she should be arrested for her actions.
Legal Implications and Next Steps
As the investigation progresses, the community continues to grapple with the implications of this incident. Morgan, 32, is currently facing serious charges that could lead to significant legal consequences. The Athens-Clarke County police are actively handling the case, ensuring that both the safety of the community and the integrity of the investigation are prioritized.
This incident raises broader questions about the intersection of free speech, hate symbols, and community safety. Local leaders and residents alike are left to reflect on the values they wish to uphold in their neighborhoods, especially in light of rising concerns about hate crimes and intolerance.
As the situation develops, the Athens community remains vigilant, emphasizing the need for a united front against hate and violence in all forms.
