BJP Issues Notice to MLA Tofajjal Hossain for Indiscipline

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has issued a show-cause notice to Tofazjal Hossain, the MLA for Boxanagar, following remarks made during a public event that were deemed a breach of party discipline. The notice, dated October 19 and signed by Amit Rakshit, the General Secretary of BJP Tripura Pradesh, requires Hossain to provide a written explanation within five days or face potential disciplinary measures.
The controversy arose after a video of Hossain’s speech at the closing ceremony of the MLA Cup Football Tournament on October 18 circulated widely on social media. In the clip, Hossain commended Rajib Bhattacharjee, the party’s state president and a Member of Parliament, for allocating ₹50 lakh from the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLAD) for the construction of the Boxanagar Mini Stadium. However, he also criticized Biplab Kumar Deb, the West Tripura MP, and Pratima Bhoumik, a former Union Minister, for neglecting his requests for assistance.
Hossain’s comments have sparked backlash within the party. Members and media commentators have accused him of disrespecting senior leaders who have played pivotal roles in the BJP’s success in Tripura. The show-cause notice characterized his statements as “gross indiscipline” and indicated a “serious violation” of the party’s code of conduct, emphasizing that such grievances should be addressed internally rather than publicly.
In response, state BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee condemned Hossain’s remarks, labeling them as unacceptable. He stated, “These comments violate party ethics. We do not tolerate any disrespect toward our leaders.” Bhattacharjee underscored the respect owed to figures like Biplab Kumar Deb and Pratima Bhoumik, asserting that any discourse perceived as anti-party will be addressed decisively.
While Hossain was unavailable for immediate comment, sources close to him suggested that his remarks were unintentional and stemmed from a moment of excitement during the event. Hossain previously achieved a notable victory in the Boxanagar by-election, winning by a significant margin following the passing of CPIM MLA Samsul Haque.
The situation underscores the delicate balance within political parties, where public statements can lead to significant internal repercussions, particularly in a party as prominent as the BJP, which has a robust structure of accountability and discipline. The outcomes of this notice may set a precedent for future interactions among party members, particularly regarding public criticism of leadership.
