Tanvi Sharma Reaches World Junior Championships Final with Strong Win

On October 19, 2025, top seed Tanvi Sharma secured her place in the final of the Yonex Sunrise BWF World Junior Championships, delivering an impressive performance against China’s Liu Si Ya. The match, held at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati, saw the 16-year-old Indian star dominate, winning with scores of 15-11 and 15-9.
With this victory, Tanvi became only the third Indian female player to reach the finals of the world junior championships, following in the footsteps of renowned players Aparna Popat and former world number one Saina Nehwal. Her remarkable performance lasted just over half an hour, showcasing her ability to handle pressure and control the game.
Path to the Final
Facing Liu, the Asian Junior Championships silver medalist, Tanvi quickly established her dominance. She opened the first game with an early lead of 7-3, employing aggressive tactics that left her opponent struggling to find a rhythm. Despite Liu’s efforts to narrow the gap to 8-7, Tanvi maintained her composure, ultimately sealing the first game with a powerful cross-court smash after just 13 minutes.
In the second game, Tanvi’s confidence grew as she raced to a 12-4 lead. Although she made a few uncharacteristic errors, including a net tap, she quickly regained her focus. Tanvi’s strategic play kept Liu on the defensive, as she effectively countered her opponent’s smashes and executed well-placed cross-court drives. The match concluded when Liu pushed a forehand drive wide, earning Tanvi a place in the finals.
Looking Ahead
In the final, Tanvi Sharma will face Anyapat Phichitpreechasak from Thailand, the second seed who advanced after a thrilling semifinal match against compatriot Yataweemin Ketklieng. Phichitpreechasak came from behind to win, with scores of 10-15, 15-11, and 15-5.
Tanvi’s achievement marks a significant milestone for Indian badminton, as she is the first Indian female player to secure a medal at the world junior championships in 17 years. As she prepares for the final, expectations remain high for the young athlete, who has demonstrated exceptional skill and determination throughout the tournament.
The men’s singles final will also feature a repeat of the Asian Junior Championships gold medal match, with top seed Mohd Zaki Ubaidillah of Indonesia facing third seed Liu Yang Ming Yu from China. Fans eagerly anticipate an exciting conclusion to the championships as players aim for the prestigious titles.
