Seafood Exports to EU Surge by 20% Amid Market Diversification

Seafood exports from India to the European Union have experienced a significant increase, rising by 20 percent in recent months. This surge comes as exporters adapt their strategies to mitigate the impact of higher tariffs imposed by the United States on Indian seafood products. In total, exports to the EU reached 215,080 metric tonnes, valued at ₹ 9,430 crore (approximately US$ 1,125.6 million), primarily driven by shipments of shrimp, cuttlefish, and squid in frozen form.
New Opportunities in the EU Market
The Marine Products Export Development Authority (MPEDA) has announced the inclusion of 102 new Indian fishery establishments in the EU export list. D.V. Swamy, Chairman of MPEDA, emphasized the need for exporters to explore alternative markets such as Russia, the Middle East, and South Korea, in addition to strengthening the domestic seafood market. Following a 50 percent increase in tariffs by the US, these efforts are essential to sustain growth and reduce dependence on a single market.
Swamy discussed the authority’s initiatives to enhance export logistics, including upgrading cold chain infrastructure and providing financial incentives for using reefer containers and air cargo. He noted, “We are also signing Free Trade Agreements with many countries that would significantly increase seafood exports from India by removing tariffs and opening new market opportunities.”
Building a Stronger Domestic Market
In addition to expanding international markets, MPEDA is advising exporters to develop a robust domestic market. This strategy includes conducting consumer awareness campaigns and improving the domestic supply chain to enhance local consumption. Swamy highlighted the importance of organizing buyer-seller meetings and participating in international fairs to create new market opportunities.
The Indian seafood sector remains heavily reliant on exports, with the US and China identified as the largest markets. According to MPEDA data, the US imported 311,948 metric tonnes of frozen shrimp, while China imported 136,164 metric tonnes. For the fiscal year 2024-25, India exported a total of 1,698,170 tonnes of seafood, valued at ₹ 62,408.45 crore (approximately US$ 7.45 billion).
Frozen shrimp continues to dominate export figures, making up 44 percent of both quantity and value, followed by frozen fish at 20 percent, along with frozen squid, frozen cuttlefish, and chilled and live seafood items.
MPEDA’s ongoing collaboration with stakeholders aims to enhance cold chain infrastructure and improve export strategies, including the push for direct flights to key buyer markets. Such initiatives are vital for ensuring the continued growth and competitiveness of India’s seafood industry in an increasingly challenging global market.
