On October 18, 2023, Bangladesh’s International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) issued arrest warrants for former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and several others. This action arises from charges of crimes against humanity linked to alleged enforced disappearances during her leadership of the Awami League party. The tribunal’s decision comes after a thorough review by a three-member bench, led by Justice Md Golam Mortuza Mozumder.

According to media reports, the ICT has taken cognizance of charges filed in two separate cases. The accusations against Hasina and 29 others include overseeing the detention, torture, and disappearance of political opponents at undisclosed facilities operated by elite security agencies. The state-run BSS news agency confirmed these developments.

Details of the Charges

The prosecution has brought forward five charges against a group of 13 individuals in the first case. This group includes Hasina and her former security and defense adviser, Tarique Ahmed Siddique. These charges are related to alleged crimes committed at the Joint Interrogation Cell of the Directorate General of Forces Intelligence.

In the second case, Hasina, Siddique, and 15 others face similar allegations concerning the disappearance and torture of detainees within a secret cell operated by the Rapid Action Battalion’s Task Force Interrogation unit. Prosecutors have also filed five charges of crimes against humanity in this instance.

Context of the Arrest Warrants

These arrest warrants come in the wake of significant political upheaval in Bangladesh. Hasina, 78, fled to India on August 5, 2022, after resigning amid widespread anti-government protests led by students. This agitation ultimately resulted in the downfall of her Awami League administration.

The ICT has scheduled an appearance for the accused on October 22, 2023, requiring them to present themselves before the court. The implications of these charges could have profound effects on Bangladesh’s political landscape, already strained by years of tension and conflict.

As the situation develops, observers are closely monitoring the response from both domestic and international communities regarding these serious allegations against a former head of state.
