Hagrama Mohilary has been sworn in as the chief executive member of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) for a historic fourth term during a public ceremony held in Kokrajhar on March 10, 2024. His election signifies a significant political comeback for the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which secured 28 out of 40 seats in the recent BTC elections, marking the first electoral defeat for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam since 2016.

The oath of office was administered by Chief Secretary Ravi Kota. Mohilary took his pledge in English, while his deputy, Rihon Daimary, opted for the Bodo language, emphasizing the cultural heritage of the region. The ceremony attracted notable attendees, including Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, various state cabinet ministers, and Pradyut Debbarman, the royal scion of Tripura and chief of Tipra Motha.

Despite the BPF not yet formally joining the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), Mohilary made it clear that the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) must be removed from the alliance for the BPF to consider entering. In a show of support, Chief Minister Sarma assured that the relationship between the state government and the BTC administration would be productive, emphasizing that governance would continue without disruption due to political affiliations.

In his inaugural speech, Mohilary likened the rain that fell during the event to “blessings washing away pollutants.” He expressed his commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the people of Bodoland and called for cooperation from the Assam government, cabinet ministers, and officials. Mohilary specifically requested assistance from the Chief Minister’s office in Dispur to ensure effective governance in the BTC.

Sarma echoed this sentiment, stating, “The Assam government will extend full help and cooperation to Hagrama Mohilary’s administration.” He expressed optimism that the new BTC leadership would advance the ongoing peace process and development agenda.

Prime Minister Modi also extended his congratulations to Mohilary via social media platform X, promising ongoing support from both central and state governments to realize the vision of Bodofa Upendranath Brahma. In response, Mohilary expressed his gratitude and commitment to working towards a “Viksit Bharat,” while seeking the Prime Minister’s guidance for comprehensive development in Bodoland.

With a diverse population comprising 26 tribes and communities in BTC areas, Chief Minister Sarma urged the BTC administration to effectively implement government schemes that meet the aspirations of the local populace.
