Gareth Southgate Eyes Manchester United Role Amid Pressure on Amorim

Manchester United’s challenging start to the season has prompted speculation about the future of under-pressure coach Ruben Amorim. Reports indicate that former England manager Gareth Southgate could be in line to take over at Old Trafford, should the club decide to part ways with Amorim.
United has suffered three defeats in six league matches this season, leading to a disappointing position of 14th in the Premier League table. The team is currently eight points behind league leaders Liverpool and recently faced a shock exit from the English League Cup after a loss to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town. This has intensified scrutiny on Amorim, who has overseen just nine wins in his 33 league games in charge.
While Southgate, a lifelong United supporter, is reportedly open to discussions about the managerial position, he is clear that any potential appointment would require a commitment from the club’s leadership to embark on a long-term vision. According to a report from Yahoo Sports, Southgate envisions a four-year rebuilding process to return United to competitiveness in the Champions League.
Amorim, who has faced mounting pressure, confirmed that he does not plan to resign. He emphasized the importance of achieving positive results to secure his position. “We understand that we need results to continue the project,” he stated. “This is a very big club with a lot of sponsors, with two owners. So it’s hard; the balance is really hard.”
As the situation unfolds, the focus shifts to United’s upcoming match against promoted side Sunderland. Amorim acknowledged the precarious nature of his role, stating, “That is a decision of the board. I cannot do that (resign).”
The ongoing developments at Manchester United highlight a club grappling with its identity and ambition in a competitive landscape. With a record-equaling 20 top-flight trophies and 13 Premier League titles, the stakes remain high for a team that once thrived under legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson.
As the pressure builds, both Amorim and the club face critical decisions that will shape the future of Manchester United.
