Agartala Celebrates First Ravana Dahan Ceremony on Vijaya Dashami

The city of Agartala witnessed its inaugural Ravana Dahan ceremony on October 24, 2023, at the BT College ground, marking a significant cultural event during the festival of Vijaya Dashami. The ceremony, a symbolic representation of Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana, attracted a large crowd eager to participate in the celebration.
Chief Minister Manik Saha officially inaugurated the event and led the ceremonial burning of the effigy of Ravana. This spectacle is traditionally observed in many regions of India, known by various names such as Dussehra or Dashahara, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil. The event showcased the vibrant cultural heritage of the region and brought together community members in celebration.
BJP leader Papia Datta expressed her delight at the successful organization of the ceremony, noting that while Ravana Dahan had been previously observed in places like Belonia and Shantir Bazar, this was the first time it occurred in Agartala. Datta emphasized the importance of the festival, stating, “Today is Vijaya Dashami, and on this auspicious occasion, I extend my greetings and best wishes to everyone. This day symbolizes the triumph of good forces over evil.”
The Ravana Dahan event has deep cultural significance, marking the day when Lord Rama defeated Ravana and returned to Ayodhya with Goddess Sita, a story deeply rooted in Indian mythology. Datta reflected on her experiences visiting other locations where Ravana Dahan was celebrated, which inspired her to advocate for a similar event in Agartala. “About 3-4 years ago, I had visited places like Belonia and Shantir Bazar, where I witnessed Ravana Dahan, and from then on, I carried the thought that such an event should also be organised in Agartala. Today, that dream has come true,” she added.
The event saw the participation of numerous dignitaries, including the Mayor and other local leaders, reinforcing the communal spirit of the celebration. Datta expressed enthusiasm for future celebrations, stating, “We are preparing to organise this event on an even grander scale in the coming years.”
The successful execution of the first Ravana Dahan in Agartala not only highlights the city’s cultural richness but also fosters a sense of unity among its residents. As the community comes together to commemorate this pivotal moment, the event is expected to become a cherished tradition in Agartala’s cultural calendar.
