Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister Promises High-Level Inquiry into CJ Roy’s Death
Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar announced on January 31, 2024, that a high-level investigation will take place concerning the death of CJ Roy, the Chairman of the Confident Group, who reportedly died by suicide. The incident allegedly occurred during an interrogation by the Income Tax Department, when Roy requested a brief pause before the tragic event took place.
According to a statement released by Shivakumar’s office, Roy had been under questioning by tax authorities when he asked for five minutes alone. It was during this time that he fatally shot himself. The statement emphasized the government’s commitment to uncovering the truth, noting, “We will conduct a high-level investigation and uncover the truth.”
Details surrounding the incident indicate that a team from Kerala has already arrived to assist with the investigation. Shivakumar expressed that this situation was unfortunate, remarking on Roy’s reputation as a successful businessman. He confirmed that the government has been requested to provide a report to officials in Delhi and promised transparency throughout the investigation.
Investigative Details Emerge Following Incident
Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Central Division, Akshay Machindra Hakay, provided insights into the preliminary findings of the case. He stated that the incident likely occurred between 15:00 and 15:15. “At first glance, it appears to be a death by gunshot. An investigation is underway, and the crime scene is being thoroughly analyzed,” Hakay noted.
The Bengaluru City Police Commissioner, Seemanth Kumar Singh, confirmed that the incident took place within the jurisdiction of the Ashok Nagar police station. He explained that Roy was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Singh indicated that the Income Tax team had been conducting searches at Roy’s premises for the previous two to three days, which included a recent raid.
Singh further elaborated, “A team from Kerala had also come. The police are in contact with family members, who are currently not in India and are expected to arrive by flight today.” While early indications suggest a suicide, Singh reiterated that further investigations are ongoing to gather all relevant details.
As the investigation unfolds, the authorities are expected to provide updates on their findings. The tragic death of CJ Roy has raised significant concerns, prompting calls for a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the incident.
