Trump Proposes Two-Year Closure of Kennedy Center for Revamp
US President Donald Trump has proposed a nearly two-year closure of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to facilitate a comprehensive revitalization of the iconic venue. This plan, which requires board approval, is part of Trump’s vision to transform what he described as a “tired, broken, and dilapidated” institution into a world-class cultural hub.
In a post on Truth Social on February 2, Trump stated that closing the center would expedite construction and improve quality. He indicated that if the center were to close, the project could begin as early as July 4, 2026, coinciding with the United States’ 250th anniversary. Trump asserted that financing for the renovations has already been secured and that expert advice has guided this decision.
Richard Grenell, President of the Kennedy Center, confirmed the closure plan in an email to staff, promising more details on staffing and operations would follow. Grenell mentioned that $257 million had been allocated in the previous year for capital repairs, maintenance, and security enhancements, stating that a temporary shutdown “just makes sense” to hasten completion.
Under Trump’s leadership, which began last year, the Kennedy Center has experienced significant changes. These include his name being added to the facade, repainting of exterior columns, and the display of portraits of the first and second couples. However, these alterations have sparked legal challenges and criticism, as US law typically prohibits the memorialization of living figures.
Political Reaction and Backlash
The proposed closure has elicited strong reactions from various political figures. Representative Joyce Beatty of Ohio expressed that Congress should have been consulted on this matter, given the Kennedy Center’s congressional funding. Members of the Kennedy family, including Jack Schlossberg and former Congressman Joe Kennedy III, have also voiced concerns, warning that the institution’s legacy and public purpose are at risk.
Democratic lawmakers have condemned the proposal, raising questions about the future of significant annual events such as the Kennedy Center Honors and the Mark Twain Prize. Staff members have reported that they were not formally informed about the closure plans, contributing to an atmosphere of uncertainty and unrest within the organization.
The upheaval at the Kennedy Center has coincided with declining ticket sales and a noticeable loss of attendance. Several prominent artists and institutions, such as the Washington National Opera, have departed, while numerous performers have canceled their appearances. Senior programming officials have either resigned or been dismissed amid the ongoing turmoil.
Trump and his administration have frequently accused previous leadership of mismanagement and neglect, claims that former officials deny. These allegations are currently under investigation by Senate Democrats. Despite the mounting backlash, Trump maintains that the overhaul is essential, asserting that the center is in “tremendous disrepair” and attributing this condition to years of poor management.
As the situation develops, the future of the Kennedy Center hangs in the balance, with significant implications for its operation and cultural significance.
