Terracotta artisans from Odisha have achieved a remarkable feat by setting two world records in clay production during an event held at Kalabhoomi. The gathering, which took place on March 10, 2024, featured an unprecedented participation of 1,000 artisans, marking the highest number of participants in a clay crafting competition. This monumental event not only celebrated the skill of these artisans but also highlighted the rich cultural heritage of Odisha.

The competition saw seven artisans surpass the previous world record for the most clay items produced in one hour. The top performer, Sebak Rana from Bargarh district, crafted an impressive 310 clay glasses, exceeding the prior record of 212 items set by Michael Weber of the United States. Following Rana, Madhab Muduli from Nayagarh produced 248 items, while Than Sundar Rana from Balangir created 232 pieces. Other notable contributors included Ramesh Chandra Muduli from Balasore with 230 items and Bijay Behera from Angul with 227.

Celebrating Heritage and Craftsmanship

The event was inaugurated by Odisha’s Minister for Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts, Pradeep Bal Samanta, who commended the artisans for their dedication to preserving Odisha’s rich history and traditions. He emphasized the significance of terracotta and pottery as vital components of the state’s handicraft legacy. “These artisans are the torchbearers of Odisha’s history, culture, and tradition,” he stated during his address.

Following the completion of the competition, the Minister personally honored the record-breaking artisans, acknowledging their exceptional contributions to the craft. The celebration of these achievements resonates with Odisha’s ongoing efforts to promote indigenous crafts under the “Vocal for Local” initiative, which aims to uplift local artisans and their traditional skills.

Impact on Local Artisans and Community

According to Guha Poonam Tapas Kumar, Commissioner-cum-Secretary to the Handlooms, Textiles, and Handicrafts Department, terracotta and pottery are among Odisha’s 64 recognized handicrafts and support over 36,000 artisans across more than 40 craft clusters. The event attracted numerous distinguished guests, including Handicrafts Director Dr. Nivedita Prusti, Padma Shri awardee Binod Maharana, and National Award-winning terracotta artisans Manabodh Rana and Mukunda Rana, alongside representatives from the World Book of Records.

This achievement not only places Odisha on the global map in terms of artisanal skill but also emphasizes the enduring vitality of traditional crafts in a rapidly modernizing world. The dedication of these artisans serves as an inspiration for future generations, ensuring that the rich cultural tapestry of Odisha continues to thrive.
