VHP Demands Title Change for Manoj Bajpayee’s Film Amid Controversy
The title of Manoj Bajpayee’s upcoming film, Ghooskhor Pandat, has sparked significant controversy, prompting the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) to call for its immediate withdrawal. Shriraj Nair, a spokesperson for the VHP, criticized Netflix for allegedly promoting content that ridicules Hindu deities and practices. In an interview with ANI, Nair stated that while the VHP traditionally refrains from interfering with creative endeavors, the portrayal of Hindus in this film has crossed a line.
Nair expressed concerns that the film and its content mock Hindu culture, including the depiction of sadhus, saints, and deities. He warned that if the film’s title and content are not altered, the VHP and its affiliated group, Bajrang Dal, may resort to more drastic measures. “It should be withdrawn immediately, and the contents should also be withdrawn,” he asserted.
The backlash has ignited protests across India. On March 15, 2024, demonstrators gathered at Subhash Chowk in Prayagraj, burning effigies of the film’s producer, director, and actors. Protesters voiced their demands for a ban on the OTT platform, alleging that the film targets Hindus and Brahmins. They threatened further demonstrations if their demands are not met within three days.
In addition to the VHP’s objections, the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) has criticized the title of Ghooskhor Pandat. The FWICE, which represents 36 affiliated associations within the media and entertainment sector, issued a letter stating that the film’s title could disrupt social harmony and unity. They warned producer Neeraj Pandey that failure to address these concerns may result in action against him.
In response to the mounting pressure, Pandey acknowledged that the film’s title has upset a portion of the audience. He announced that all promotional materials for the film would be temporarily removed to address the controversy.
Manoj Bajpayee also commented on the situation, emphasizing his respect for public sentiments. “As an actor, I come to a film through the character and story I am playing,” he noted.
Directed by Ritesh Shah, Ghooskhor Pandat features Bajpayee portraying Ajay Dikshit, also known as Pandat, a corrupt police officer. His plans for a lucrative night are thwarted when he becomes entangled in a global conspiracy set in Delhi. The film is produced by Pandey under his banner, Friday Filmworks, and was recently announced as part of the 2026 Netflix India slate.
The ongoing controversy highlights the complex intersection of art, culture, and community sentiment in India, raising questions about the responsibilities of filmmakers in representing diverse perspectives. As the situation develops, it remains to be seen how the filmmakers will respond to the demands for changes to the title and content.
