Delhi Police Budget Increased by 4.7% to ₹12,503 Crore
The Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced an allocation of ₹12,503.65 crore to the Delhi Police as part of the Union Budget for the fiscal year 2026-2027. This figure represents a modest increase of 4.7 percent compared to the previous year’s budget of ₹11,931.66 crore. The revised budget for 2025-2026 was set at ₹12,405.70 crore, while the allocation for 2024-2025 was ₹12,133.16 crore. The increased funding in this latest budget means the Delhi Police will receive an additional ₹571 crore.
In detail, the Union Home Ministry plans to allocate ₹908.78 crore specifically for the training and education of police personnel. Additionally, ₹342.50 crore will be directed towards enhancing the infrastructure of the city’s police. The budget aims to address various operational needs, including routine expenditures and key infrastructure projects.
Investment in Women’s Safety Initiatives
A significant portion of the budget is dedicated to improving women’s safety. The Ministry of Home Affairs has earmarked ₹886.05 crore for various initiatives aimed at enhancing security for women. This includes ₹91.03 crore for projects funded by the Nirbhaya Fund, which was established in response to the tragic 2012 Delhi gang-rape case. The fund is designed to finance projects that enhance women’s safety in public spaces, with the Ministry of Women and Child Development serving as the nodal agency for evaluating these initiatives.
The Nirbhaya Fund supports a variety of programs, such as One-Stop Centres, Safe City Projects, and Fast Track Courts, all of which aim to provide timely interventions and better justice for women. It also funds Emergency Response Support Systems (ERSSs), forensic training, and cybercrime prevention initiatives, with allocations made to states and union territories for implementation.
Modernization of Police Infrastructure
In addition to investments in women’s safety, the budget includes ₹300 crore for the modernization of prisons, reflecting a broader commitment to enhancing public safety and security. The allocation of ₹342.50 crore to the Delhi Police is specifically aimed at bolstering infrastructure in the national capital. This funding will support the implementation of advanced technology, including modern traffic management systems and improved communication networks.
Officials have indicated that this enhanced allocation will bolster several flagship initiatives, including the Safe City project, thereby improving overall policing and public safety infrastructure in Delhi. The Delhi Police is tasked with maintaining law and order in the National Capital Territory, managing traffic, and ensuring the safety of residents and visitors alike.
Overall, the budgetary provisions signal a focused effort to enhance the operational capabilities of the Delhi Police, ensuring they are better equipped to tackle the challenges of urban policing in a rapidly evolving environment.
