Eagles Coach Defends Hurts Against Criticism of Super Bowl Role

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has strongly refuted claims suggesting that quarterback Jalen Hurts merely “went along for the ride” during the team’s Super Bowl run last season. In a recent press conference, Sirianni expressed his frustration with the narrative, stating, “I think that’s bulls—.” He emphasized the critical role Hurts plays in the team, highlighting that the quarterback position is pivotal in football, a sport fundamentally built on teamwork.
Sirianni’s comments come in the wake of a mixed start to the current season, where the Eagles began with a 2-2 record. In response, the team adjusted its offensive strategy, focusing more on the run game led by Saquon Barkley, who finished the previous season with a career-high 2,005 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, earning him the title of Offensive Player of the Year. This shift allowed Philadelphia to rally, resulting in a remarkable 12-1 record in the latter part of the season.
Despite having fewer passing attempts and yards than in previous seasons—361 attempts and 2,903 yards—Hurts proved his value when needed most. His performance in Super Bowl LIX was particularly impressive, as he completed 77% of his passes, scoring three touchdowns and earning the MVP award.
Sirianni noted that while Hurts is supported by a talented roster, including wide receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, as well as a strong offensive line, this does not diminish his accomplishments. He argued that many successful quarterbacks in the league benefit from a solid team around them. “One of the reasons I love football so much is that it takes everybody to accomplish your goals,” he said.
The coach provided examples of legendary quarterbacks, stating that their greatness is often linked to the talents of their teammates. He mentioned Tom Brady with Rob Gronkowski, Patrick Mahomes with Travis Kelce, and Steve Young with Jerry Rice, underscoring that football is inherently a collaborative sport.
Sirianni’s passionate defense of Hurts reflects not only his confidence in the quarterback but also an understanding of the dynamics of success in professional football. As the Eagles look to build on their prior success, the focus remains on the collective effort required to achieve their goals.
