The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has commissioned the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi to undertake a detailed structural audit of the Triveni Heights apartment complex in Dwarka. This decision comes in the wake of a powerful explosion that occurred on October 5, 2023, causing significant damage and panic among residents.

The explosion, which took place around 19:15 local time, resulted in visible damage to the building’s basement and several parked vehicles. Although initial investigations by the fire department and DDA engineers indicated a pressure build-up in the basement’s pipelines, no definitive source of ignition or chemical residue was identified.

Phased Approach to Structural Safety Audit

The audit will be conducted in two distinct phases. In the first phase, IIT-Delhi will perform a comprehensive assessment to determine the necessary scope and nature of tests for a deeper technical evaluation. The second phase will focus on a detailed structural stability study, incorporating non-destructive testing to identify any damage or vulnerabilities resulting from the explosion.

A DDA official emphasized the importance of the audit, stating, “The audit will ensure there is no compromise on the safety of residents. IIT-Delhi has been asked to conduct an independent and scientific study.” The findings from this audit will guide potential remedial measures needed at the site.

Following the incident, residents raised concerns regarding the structural integrity of the building. Many occupants of the lower floors temporarily relocated until the authorities could confirm the building’s safety. The DDA has been actively consulting with the Delhi Fire Services, BSES, and the Delhi Police to review the preliminary findings and ensure a thorough investigation.

Resident Safety and Future Precautions

Although residents have been permitted to return to their apartments, they have been advised to exercise caution, particularly when accessing the basement area. The DDA has requested IIT-Delhi to provide its initial observations promptly, enabling any urgent safety interventions to be undertaken without delay.

The audit not only aims to assess the immediate impact of the blast but also to evaluate the overall condition of the structure, including the foundation and materials used. This comprehensive approach is intended to ensure long-term safety for all residents of Triveni Heights.

As the investigation continues, the DDA remains committed to prioritizing the safety and well-being of the complex’s residents, working diligently to address any concerns that may arise in the aftermath of this incident.
