Modi Calls for Action Against Obesity Crisis in Independence Day Speech

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasized the urgent need to address the growing obesity crisis in India during his address at the Red Fort on August 15, 2023, marking the country’s 79th Independence Day. Modi’s comments came as he highlighted alarming projections suggesting that one in three Indians may face obesity in the near future. He urged families to take proactive measures to combat this escalating health issue.
In his speech, Modi stated, “When discussing fitness, I am compelled to raise an important concern. Obesity is becoming a significant challenge that every family should take seriously. We must take proactive steps to protect ourselves from it.” He reiterated his earlier recommendations, advocating for families to reduce their cooking oil purchases by 10 percent and to cut down on consumption by the same amount regularly.
Recent data underscores the severity of the situation. A survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the Madras Diabetes Research Foundation (MDRF) revealed that approximately 25.4 crore Indians, or 28.6 percent of the population, are experiencing generalized obesity. The survey further estimated that around 351 million individuals, representing 39.5 percent of the populace, suffer from abdominal obesity, a condition identified by excess fat around vital internal organs.
Health Implications and Dietary Concerns
The ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition released dietary guidelines last year, indicating a worrying trend of rising obesity rates across various states. The report noted that unhealthy diets contribute to 56.4 percent of India’s total disease burden, with an alarming focus on excessive carbohydrate consumption. Recognized as a chronic and relapsing disease, obesity is linked to over 200 health complications, including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, coronary heart disease, and certain types of cancer.
The World Health Organization (WHO) defines overweight and obesity in adults using body mass index (BMI). Individuals with a BMI of 25 to 30 kilograms per square metre are classified as overweight, while those exceeding 30 kilograms per square metre are considered obese. Experts point out that India faces a unique challenge with abdominal obesity, which can complicate health outcomes due to fat accumulation in the abdominal region while maintaining leaner limbs.
Modi has consistently addressed the obesity epidemic throughout the year. In a February 2023 radio broadcast, he first urged citizens to reduce the use of cooking oils prevalent in unhealthy diets. He has repeatedly advocated for adopting a more active and healthier lifestyle to help prevent obesity.
Recent Developments in Treatment Options
The urgency surrounding obesity management has been further underscored by the launch of two new medications in India this year: Wegovy by Novo Nordisk and Mounjaro by Eli Lilly and Company. These drugs have gained significant attention globally for their effectiveness in treating obesity.
As the Indian government seeks to combat this growing health crisis, Modi’s call to action serves as a reminder of the collective responsibility families hold in promoting healthier lifestyles. The combination of informed dietary choices and increased physical activity could play a crucial role in reversing the trends associated with obesity and its related health risks.
