Buffalo Bills’ Ed Oliver Ruled Out Against Jets Due to Injury
Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver will not participate in the upcoming game against the New York Jets due to a left ankle injury. Coach Sean McDermott confirmed Oliver’s absence on Friday, detailing that the injury occurred when he was stepped on during practice on March 15, 2024.
Oliver had recently showcased an impressive performance in the Bills’ season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, which defensive coordinator Bobby Babich described as “the best overall game he’s played.” He played a pivotal role in that victory, notably forcing a fumble from running back Derrick Henry that contributed significantly to the team’s comeback.
In the locker room on Thursday, Oliver was seen in a walking boot and utilized a medical scooter for mobility. He did not participate in the team’s walk-through session that day, indicating the severity of his condition. Sources informed ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Oliver’s recovery may take longer than just this week, which poses challenges for the Bills as they prepare to face two AFC East rivals within a short timeframe.
The Bills will play against the Miami Dolphins on “Thursday Night Football” next week, and while McDermott could not provide a definitive timeline for Oliver’s return, he expressed a cautious optimism. “I think just being in the early stages of the recovery piece, I think there’s a chance,” he stated. Yet, he acknowledged uncertainty surrounding the specifics of his recovery.
Oliver’s absence will place additional pressure on the Bills’ defensive unit, particularly as they face a Jets offense that demonstrated significant rushing capabilities, tallying the fourth-most yards in Week 1 with 182 yards. The team will need to rely on its younger defensive tackles, including T.J. Sanders, a second-round rookie, to step up in Oliver’s absence.
Last season, Oliver had a total of three sacks, but he already made a notable impact this year, achieving six tackles and a sack in the opening game. As the Bills navigate their upcoming schedule, the need for a strong run defense will be paramount, particularly against a Jets team looking to capitalize on any weaknesses.
As the situation develops, the Bills will be closely monitoring Oliver’s progress, hoping for a swift recovery while preparing for the challenges ahead.
