New Handloom and Craft Villages to Enhance Textile Tourism in Madhya Pradesh

A new initiative in Madhya Pradesh aims to enhance textile tourism by developing two villages: a Handloom Village in Khargone district and a Craft Village in Dhar district. These projects will follow the successful model of the Pranpur Tourist Village in Ashoknagar, which showcases Chanderi weave. The Handloom Village will specifically highlight the Maheshwari weave, while the Craft Village will focus on the renowned Bagh print.

Keria Khedi, a small village located approximately 4 kilometers from Maheshwar, will be developed into the Handloom Village. This initiative is anticipated to benefit around 80 to 100 families engaged in weaving Maheshwari saris, salwar-suits, and other textiles. The village’s transformation will include the establishment of a Dyeing House, a cafeteria, and an Experience Centre, alongside upgraded civic infrastructure.

Officials from the MP Tourism Board have indicated that the project will allow students and researchers from esteemed institutions such as NIFT (National Institute of Fashion Technology) and NID (National Institute of Design) to observe live demonstrations of weaving and dyeing techniques. The project has received funding of Rs 5.11 crore from the Union Textiles Ministry, with construction expected to commence shortly and conclude by June 2024.

The development of Keria Khedi as a tourist destination is intended to alleviate pressure on Maheshwar, redirecting some visitors who typically come for darshan and a dip in the Narmada River. The village is conveniently located about 2 kilometers from a ghat on the river, making it an attractive stop for tourists.

In addition to the Handloom Village, Kukshi, the Tehsil headquarters in Dhar district, will be developed into a Craft Village. This area is home to approximately 1,500 Bagh artisans who specialize in the traditional craft of Bagh print textiles. The project will enable tourists to purchase these unique textiles directly from the artisans, fostering a stronger connection between creators and consumers.

The total investment for the Craft Village initiative is projected at Rs 20.60 crore, with the completion planned in two phases. This development aligns with the broader goal of promoting traditional textile arts and enhancing the local economy through increased tourism.

Overall, these projects reflect a concerted effort to celebrate and preserve the rich textile heritage of Madhya Pradesh while providing sustainable economic opportunities for local artisans and weavers.
