Jeep Recalls Over 320,000 PHEVs Due to Fire Risk Concerns
Jeep has announced a significant safety recall affecting more than 320,000 plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) in the United States due to a potential fire risk. This risk can manifest even when the vehicle is parked, prompting the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to advise owners against charging their vehicles until the necessary repairs are made.
The recall specifically targets the Jeep Wrangler models from 2020 to 2025 and the Jeep Grand Cherokee plug-in hybrids manufactured between 2022 and 2026. According to the NHTSA, the recall encompasses 228,221 Jeep Wranglers and 91,844 Jeep Grand Cherokees. The vehicles may contain battery cells with separator damage that has been linked to at least one reported injury and poses an increased fire hazard when the battery is fully charged.
Previous Software Update Issues
This latest recall follows a 2024 NHTSA recall for Jeep models, where it was discovered that a software update had failed to identify battery abnormalities that could potentially lead to fires. This oversight has raised concerns regarding the safety protocols in place for battery management in these vehicles.
In light of the recall, Jeep owners are urged to take immediate precautions. Owners should park their vehicles outdoors, away from buildings and other vehicles, to minimize potential risks. Additionally, they are advised to refrain from charging their batteries until the issue has been resolved.
Chrysler, the manufacturer of Jeep, plans to begin mailing recall notices to affected owners starting on December 2, 2024. Owners can also reach out to Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403 using the NHTSA recall number 25V-741 for further information and assistance.
As the situation develops, Jeep and Chrysler are focused on addressing the safety concerns associated with these vehicles, ensuring that owners are informed and protected against potential hazards.
