Swaranjit Singh Khalsa Becomes First Sikh Mayor of Norwich, Connecticut

Swaranjit Singh Khalsa, a 40-year-old Amritdhari Sikh originally from Jalandhar, has made history by being elected as the first Sikh mayor of Norwich, Connecticut. His election marks a significant milestone not only for the city but for the state as well, as he becomes the first individual of Sikh heritage to hold this position in Connecticut. Khalsa won the mayoral race over former Republican mayor Peter Nystrom, assuming office in a town that is home to approximately 10 Sikh families.

Khalsa’s political journey has been deeply influenced by his family’s active involvement in the Sikh community, particularly in Delhi and Punjab. His advocacy for Sikh rights and identity began in the aftermath of the September 11 attacks, a period during which Sikhs faced increased discrimination and hate crimes. Over the years, Khalsa has transitioned his focus towards local governance and community engagement, promoting acceptance and understanding.

Recognition for Community Leadership

In 2017, Khalsa gained national recognition when he received the FBI Director’s Community Leadership Award for 2016. He was the only Indian among 56 recipients honored that year, receiving the award from then-FBI Director James B. Comey at the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C. The citation commended Khalsa for his commitment to educating the public about tolerance and respect for diversity.

The FBI noted, “His primary focus has been on the teachings of his faith, Sikhism, to inner-city residents to break down stereotypes.” Khalsa has collaborated with local, state, and federal law enforcement to improve their understanding of diverse communities, emphasizing conflict resolution and awareness of the Sikh identity, including teachings about the Five Ks and the kirpan, a ceremonial sword.

Khalsa estimates that he has delivered around 1,200 presentations to police officers, firefighters, and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officials, among others. His extensive outreach efforts include media campaigns and highway billboards aimed at promoting awareness and understanding of Sikh culture.

A Journey from Jalandhar to Leadership

Khalsa’s journey to political leadership began when he moved to the United States in 2007 for higher education after completing his engineering degree at DAV Institute of Engineering and Technology. He earned a master’s degree in computer science from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and settled in Norwich in 2010. Before entering politics, Khalsa built a successful career in the construction business.

His father, Parminder Pal Singh Khalsa, leads the Sikh Sewak Society International, a testament to the family’s commitment to community service and activism. Khalsa’s late grandfather, Inderpal Singh Khalsa, was also prominent in the Sikh community, serving on key committees in Delhi.

As the new mayor, Khalsa aims to continue his work in community education and advocacy, building bridges between cultures and fostering an inclusive environment in Norwich. His story serves as an inspiration, highlighting the importance of representation and the impact of local activism in addressing broader societal issues.
