Father and Neighbour Detained After Sexual Abuse of Teen Girl

A 16-year-old girl from Junagadh, Gujarat, has endured years of sexual abuse, allegedly perpetrated by her father. This traumatic situation escalated when a neighbour she confided in exploited her vulnerability, leading to further assaults. Both men have been detained by local authorities following an intervention from the state’s 181 women’s helpline.

According to reports, the abuse began approximately five years ago, with the girl’s father allegedly subjecting her to horrific acts while living with her and her mother, who reportedly has learning difficulties. The father works at a factory in the local GIDC industrial estate.

The situation intensified three months ago when the teenager sought help from a 49-year-old neighbour. Rather than offering support, he allegedly took advantage of her trust, promising to help her escape her home life but instead raped her multiple times. Police sources indicate that the neighbour assaulted her on three occasions within this period.

In a disturbing turn of events, the neighbour is said to have contacted the 181 helpline anonymously to report the father’s crimes, likely viewing him as an obstacle to his own access to the girl. This act prompted a response from the helpline, leading to the involvement of local law enforcement.

After the intervention, the girl was taken to the police station, where, after receiving counselling, she bravely disclosed the extent of her trauma. She named both her father and the neighbour as her abusers.

Hitesh Dhandhaliya, the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Junagadh, confirmed the detention of both suspects. He stated, “We have detained both the accused. The victim’s elder sister has been living at her maternal uncle’s house, while the younger girl was living with the family. The investigation is underway.”

The ongoing investigation aims to uncover the full scope of the allegations and ensure justice for the victim. The case highlights the urgent need for support systems for vulnerable individuals facing abuse.
