Alina Habba Resigns as New Jersey Acting Attorney Following Court Ruling
Alina Habba has stepped down from her position as the acting Attorney for the District of New Jersey, following a ruling by the Third Circuit Court that deemed her appointment unlawful. The announcement was made by the U.S. Department of Justice on September 25, 2023.
The court’s decision has sparked significant reactions, with New Jersey’s Attorney General, Pam Bondi, labeling the ruling as “flawed.” Bondi expressed her discontent in a statement, saying, “Following the flawed Third Circuit decision disqualifying Alina Habba from performing her duties in the U.S. Attorney’s office for the District of New Jersey, I am saddened to accept Alina’s resignation.”
Habba, who previously served as an attorney for former President Donald Trump, shared her resignation via a post on social media platform X. She indicated that despite leaving her position in New Jersey, she would continue to serve at the DOJ as an advisor.
Bondi confirmed that the Department of Justice plans to challenge the Third Circuit’s ruling. She emphasized the determination to fight against the decision, indicating that they believe in the legitimacy of Habba’s appointment.
The implications of this ruling extend beyond Habba’s resignation, raising questions about the future of the U.S. Attorney’s office in New Jersey and the ongoing legal battles surrounding high-profile appointments in the region.
As this story develops, further updates are expected regarding the Department of Justice’s next steps and the broader impact of the Third Circuit Court’s ruling on similar appointments nationwide.
