Mayo Hospital Orthopaedics Achieves 2,057 Surgeries in One Year
The orthopaedics department at Mayo Hospital in Nagpur has achieved a significant milestone, performing 2,057 surgeries over the past year. This marks a 10% increase in surgical operations compared to the previous year, highlighting the hospital’s commitment to delivering equitable healthcare to a broader population.
A notable aspect of this year’s surgeries is that approximately 63% (1,295 surgeries) were conducted under government schemes, specifically the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPJAY) and Ayushman Bharat. These initiatives have enabled numerous patients, particularly those from rural and low-income backgrounds, to access advanced orthopaedic treatments without the financial burden of high hospital bills.
The orthopaedics department has also significantly contributed to the funding of these treatments, with Rs3.77 crore sanctioned under MJPJAY. This funding, provided by the government, underscores a collaborative effort that benefits both the healthcare system and the patients.
Dr. M Faisal, head of the orthopaedics department, emphasized the importance of accessible healthcare, stating, “Healthcare is a right, not a privilege. MJPJAY and Ayushman Bharat have allowed us to treat thousands of citizens free of cost. Patients who once feared surgery due to financial limitations are now walking again, working again, and living pain-free.”
The support from the state government has been pivotal in this success. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has personally championed the cause of the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), also known as Mayo Hospital, by providing state-of-the-art equipment for surgical procedures.
Looking ahead, officials from the state government have indicated plans to facilitate joint replacement surgeries through corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives at IGGMCH. A significant announcement regarding this initiative is expected soon, which could further enhance the hospital’s capacity to provide essential surgical services to the community.
The achievements of Mayo Hospital’s orthopaedics department not only reflect the hospital’s dedication to healthcare but also illustrate the positive impact of government support and initiatives aimed at making healthcare accessible to all.
