Delhi Police Arrest 82 for Brandishing Weapons Online
Delhi Police have apprehended a total of 82 individuals for displaying weapons on social media platforms as part of a crackdown named Operation Shastra. This initiative resulted in the registration of 61 FIRs and included the arrest of 67 adults and 15 minors, highlighting the serious nature of the offenses.
The operation employed lawful digital scanning and behavioural analysis of publicly available social media content. Officers reviewed various posts, including reels and short videos, where individuals were seen brandishing firearms or projecting violent imagery aimed at garnering influence and attention.
Satish Golchha, the Delhi Police Commissioner, emphasized the importance of this operation in a recent statement. He noted that, “Operation Shastra represents the evolving character of modern policing where technology, lawful enforcement, and community partnership operate together.” He added that the initiative aims not only to take firm action against illegal activities but also to promote prevention, awareness, and positive guidance for youth.
During the operation, over 500 dedicated teams, comprising more than 2,000 personnel from Special Staff and police station cyber units, conducted systematic surveillance. Their efforts were focused on identifying individuals who were promoting criminal lifestyles or displaying weapons to increase their visibility and influence.
This proactive approach by the Delhi Police reflects a growing recognition of the need for responsible digital conduct in today’s society. The authorities are keenly aware that the portrayal of firearms and violence on social media can have significant implications for community safety. By targeting these behaviors, police aim to foster a safer environment for all citizens.
The operation also serves as a reminder of the potential consequences of online actions, especially among younger audiences who may feel inclined to emulate what they see on social media. The police are committed to not only enforcing laws but also to guiding the youth towards more positive expressions of identity and influence in the digital space.
As society increasingly navigates the complexities of social media, initiatives like Operation Shastra highlight the role of law enforcement in addressing emerging challenges and ensuring public safety through a blend of technology and community engagement.
