Archer Strikes Twice as India Faces Setback in Third Test

Jofra Archer had a spectacular start to the final day of the third Test, claiming two crucial wickets in the opening session and leaving India struggling to maintain their footing. Archer’s impressive bowling performance included the dismissal of Rishabh Pant, who fell victim to a sharply seaming delivery that shattered his off-stump. Just four overs later, Washington Sundar attempted a risky shot, only to see Archer complete a remarkable one-handed catch off his own bowling.
Archer’s first breakthrough came early in the session, showcasing his skill and precision. Pant, known for his aggressive batting style, was caught off guard by the pace and movement of the ball. The wicket not only put India on the back foot but also highlighted Archer’s ability to perform under pressure.
Following Pant’s dismissal, Archer continued to exert his influence on the game. Sundar’s ill-timed shot allowed Archer to demonstrate his athleticism, as he leapt to his left to secure the catch, further asserting England’s dominance on the field.
Controversy Surrounds Siraj’s Conduct
The match was not without its controversies, particularly concerning Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj. After dismissing Ben Duckett on Day 4, Siraj celebrated with an exuberant send-off directed at the England opener, which drew the ire of match officials. The International Cricket Council (ICC) responded by fining Siraj 15 percent of his match fee for violating the code of conduct, along with assigning him one demerit point. This marks Siraj’s second demerit point, the first being issued in December 2024 for an incident involving Australia’s Travis Head.
Despite the tensions, there were no further sanctions regarding a brief shoulder contact between Siraj and Duckett as the latter returned to the pavilion. Former England captain Michael Atherton defended the match referee’s decision, stating that the contact appeared to be accidental. Atherton emphasized the importance of maintaining sportsmanship, saying, “There is a line, and no one wants to see physical altercations. The match referee has not taken any action on that shoulder barge, rightly, and just said Siraj was in Duckett’s face.”
As the third Test progresses, Archer’s performance and the surrounding incidents are set to keep both teams and fans on edge. With the match continuing to unfold, the outcome remains uncertain, but England’s early strikes have undoubtedly shifted the momentum in their favor.
