India Takes Bold Step in Global Space Missions with Axiom-4
Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, announced on Friday that India has established itself as an equal partner in international space missions. His remarks coincided with the return of Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who recently became the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 mission.
“India is now standing in the row of the world’s top countries,” Singh stated, emphasizing the country’s significant advancements in space exploration. He highlighted that Shubhanshu Shukla conducted unique experiments in life sciences and health during his time at the ISS. “These experiments were performed by Indians using kits developed in India, benefiting all of mankind,” Singh said, referring to Shukla as a symbol of Vishwabandhu, or global brotherhood.
In a related development, Shubhanshu Shukla met with President Droupadi Murmu at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where she extended her congratulations for his historic achievement. The meeting underscored the significance of Shukla’s mission and India’s growing role in global space initiatives.
Response to Natural Disasters in Kathua
On the same day, Singh visited the flood-affected areas of Kathua district to assess the damage caused by a recent cloudburst on August 17, 2023. The natural disaster resulted in significant disruption and damage to local communities. Singh interacted with families impacted by the calamity and distributed relief materials to those in need.
Speaking to the media, Singh expressed his concerns regarding the climate-induced challenges facing the region. “We have come here and assessed what actions will be taken to provide immediate relief,” he noted. He confirmed that local authorities have arranged for rations at relief centres and that his team has contributed additional relief supplies.
Singh also pointed to the need for a proactive approach to address climate change challenges, particularly concerning the Himalayan ecosystem. As part of this effort, the Department of Science and Technology has initiated a National Mission aimed at preserving the region’s delicate environment. “While this initiative will work effectively, we also need to contribute at a societal level,” he added.
Highlighting the unpredictability of weather patterns, Singh explained that while rainfall can be forecasted, incidents of cloudbursts often result from local geographical conditions. He urged communities to remain vigilant and prepared for such natural disasters, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing these urgent environmental challenges.
The dual focus on international space collaboration and domestic disaster response illustrates India’s growing stature on the global stage while addressing pressing local issues. As the nation moves forward in both arenas, it aims to balance technological advancement with environmental responsibility.
