India Emerges as Global Hub for Engineering and Technology
India is increasingly recognized as a global hub for engineering and technology, according to G. Viswanathan, Founder and Chancellor of the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT). Speaking at the 5th Indian International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Operations Management (IEOM-2025), held on the VIT campus, he emphasized the transformation of India’s reputation from merely a talent pool of technocrats to a leader in these fields.
In his presidential address, Viswanathan highlighted the pivotal role of engineering and technology in driving economic growth. The conference was jointly organized by VIT Business School and the IEOM Society International based in the United States. He urged students, researchers, and academics to grasp the significance of these disciplines, noting their integral connection to the future of industry.
AI and Robotics Bridge the Gap
Viswanathan pointed out that advancements in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics in the manufacturing sector have significantly narrowed the divide between engineering and technology. He stated, “The world belongs to those who understand the importance of engineering and technology in industries.” This statement underscores the growing reliance on these fields to enhance productivity and innovation.
He stressed the importance of applying academic knowledge to real-world scenarios, particularly in professional settings. This practical application, he argued, equips students with the skills necessary to navigate challenges in their careers and personal lives.
Viswanathan’s remarks reflect a broader trend in education and industry, where a strong emphasis on technical skills and innovative thinking is essential for future success. By fostering a deep understanding of engineering and technology, India is positioning itself as a key player on the global stage, ready to meet the demands of an increasingly complex economic landscape.
As the conference proceedings unfold, it is clear that the insights shared by leaders like Viswanathan will shape the direction of engineering and technology education in India, further solidifying its reputation as a global hub.
