The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, has appointed new Governors for the states of Haryana and Goa, along with a new Lieutenant Governor for the Union Territory of Ladakh. These appointments were announced on July 14, 2025, following the acceptance of the resignation of Brig. BD Mishra (Retd.), who previously held the position in Ladakh.

Taking over from Mishra, Kavinder Gupta, a senior member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has been named as the new Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh. Gupta has significant political experience, having served as the Deputy Chief Minister of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir under Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. His appointment marks a significant transition in the governance of Ladakh.

In Haryana, Ashim Kumar Ghosh, an academic and political thinker, has been appointed as the new Governor. Ghosh will succeed Bandaru Dattatreya, who has served in this role since July 7, 2021. Similarly, Pusapati Ashok Gajapathi Raju, a veteran politician and former Union Minister for Civil Aviation, has been appointed as the Governor of Goa, replacing PS Sreedharan Pillai.

The official statement from the President’s Secretariat noted that the appointments will take effect once the new office-holders assume their respective roles. This reshuffling of leadership comes at a time when both Haryana and Goa are navigating various developmental and governance challenges.

In a related development, on July 13, 2025, President Murmu nominated four new members to the Rajya Sabha, India’s Upper House. The nominees include former foreign secretary Harsh Vardhan Shringla, public prosecutor Ujjwal Deorao Nikam, social worker and BJP member C Sadanandan Master, and historian and academic Prof. Meenakshi Jain.

Following the announcement of Gupta’s appointment, the Jammu and Kashmir BJP leadership extended their congratulations. The party’s President, Sh. Sat Sharma, alongside Leader of Opposition Sh. Sunil Sharma, publicly praised Gupta for his new role, signaling strong party support as he transitions into this significant position in Ladakh.

As these new leaders prepare to take office, their roles will be crucial in addressing the unique challenges faced by their respective regions, particularly in the context of ongoing political and social dynamics within India. The impact of their governance will be closely monitored by citizens and political analysts alike.
