Defence Minister Rajnath Singh Engages with Sydney Community

Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh visited the BAPS Swaminarayan Mandir in Sydney on March 15, 2024, where he was warmly welcomed by children singing devotional hymns. During his visit, Singh participated in a traditional aarti ceremony and sought blessings at the temple, which serves as a cultural hub for the Indian diaspora in Australia.

While addressing the Indian community in Sydney, Singh shared insights from his recent meetings with senior Australian officials. He stated, “I arrived here the day before yesterday, and yesterday I had fruitful meetings with the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, and the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Australia. The discussions were very productive and meaningful.” His remarks highlighted the importance of diplomatic relations and showcased the ongoing dialogue between the two nations.

Singh expressed his admiration for the community’s respect for both India and Australia, particularly noting the children’s performances of the national anthems. He remarked, “I was deeply moved to see the people gathered here showing respect for both the Indian and Australian national anthems, which were beautifully sung by children. This gesture reflects your large-heartedness and the spirit of mutual respect between our two nations.”

The minister underscored India’s growing global stature during his address. He relayed that Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese had praised India’s rapid development during their discussions. Singh stated, “Yesterday, during my meeting with the Australian Prime Minister, he praised India’s rapid pace of development and progress. Today, India holds a special place at international forums; our views are being heard and respected across the world.”

Reflecting on India’s transformation, Singh noted the country’s journey from economic challenges to a position of confidence and positivity. “There was a time when India was considered a poor nation struggling with unemployment. But now, the country is progressing rapidly and moving forward with confidence and positivity,” he asserted.

Strengthening Defence Ties

Earlier in the day, Singh participated in the India-Australia Defence Industry Round Table, chaired by Australia’s Assistant Minister for Defence, Peter Khalil. Discussions focused on enhancing cooperation in the defence sector, with both nations emphasizing the importance of collaboration between their industries and armed forces.

Singh’s visit to Sydney is part of an official two-day trip, which aims to bolster bilateral relations in various sectors, including defence. The discussions held during this visit are expected to pave the way for more robust partnerships between India and Australia, aligning with both countries’ strategic interests.

As Singh concludes his trip, the engagements highlight the significance of community involvement in diplomatic relations and the mutual respect that continues to grow between India and Australia.
