On March 16, 2024, the trustees of the Shri Mahaveer Jain International Mission in Chennai donated a specialized van to the Gurupriya Vision Research Foundation, the charitable arm of the Radhatri Nethralaya tertiary eye-care hospital. This initiative aims to improve transport for vulnerable infants suffering from a serious eye condition.

During the donation ceremony, Subash Chand Ranka, a prominent figure in the mission, along with trustees Kishan Srisrimal Jain, Giresh Bhandari, Nirmal Nahar, and Niranjan Solanki, officially flagged off the vehicle. The van is designated for transporting preterm babies from underprivileged families who are affected by Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP), a condition that can lead to blindness if not treated promptly.

Praveen Krishna, the Medical Director of Radhatri Nethralaya, emphasized the importance of this donation. He noted that many families in rural areas face significant barriers in accessing timely medical care for their infants. The newly donated van will play a crucial role in bridging this gap by facilitating transportation to the hospital.

A pressing concern highlighted by Vasumathy Vedantham, also a Medical Director, is that ROP is the leading cause of childhood blindness in middle-income countries. In India, a shortage of pediatric retina specialists exacerbates the situation, making early diagnosis and treatment vital. “Rural screening requires innovative solutions such as teleophthalmology and hand-held retinal cameras,” Vedantham remarked, pointing out the need for improved technology and resources to combat the rising incidence of ROP.

This van donation represents a significant step towards enhancing healthcare access for the most vulnerable populations in Chennai and surrounding rural areas. By facilitating the transport of infants who need urgent medical attention, the initiative not only addresses immediate healthcare needs but also underscores the importance of community support in tackling public health challenges.

As organizations like the Shri Mahaveer Jain International Mission continue to collaborate with healthcare institutions, the hope is that more such initiatives will emerge. These contributions not only provide essential services but also raise awareness about critical health issues affecting children in India.
