Trump Calls for New Census to Exclude Undocumented Migrants

U.S. President Donald Trump announced on March 14, 2024, his directive to the Commerce Department to initiate a new Census that excludes undocumented immigrants. This move marks a revival of a contentious policy from his first term, which was ultimately ruled against by the courts and reversed by his successor, Joe Biden.
Trump shared his intentions early Thursday on Truth Social, emphasizing that the population count should reflect “modern-day facts and figures.” He asserted, “People who are in our Country illegally will not be counted in the census.” The former president has consistently criticized the inclusion of undocumented migrants in the Census, which plays a crucial role in determining congressional representation.
In the final year of his presidency, Trump signed a memorandum aimed at excluding undocumented immigrants from the Census, a policy that faced legal challenges. Courts ruled that only Congress has the authority to define the criteria for census participation. After taking office in 2021, Biden reversed this policy through an executive order.
The timing of Trump’s announcement coincides with a broader campaign by his administration to target migrants in the United States illegally. This includes plans for increased arrests and deportations, actions that have generated substantial legal opposition and numerous lawsuits.
Recent polling data indicates that this aggressive stance may be impacting Trump’s public approval ratings. A Reuters/Ipsos poll revealed that his approval rating concerning immigration has dropped to 41%, the lowest since his return to the political stage. Critics highlight that the tactics employed, such as workplace raids conducted by masked agents, have contributed to the declining perception of his administration.
As the 2024 presidential election approaches, Trump’s latest announcement suggests a continued focus on immigration policy as a central theme of his campaign. This renewed push raises significant questions about the future of census practices and the political landscape in the United States.
