70% of Mumbai-Goa Highway Repairs Completed Ahead of Festivities
The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) announced that approximately 70% of the repair work on the Mumbai-Goa highway has been completed, despite challenges posed by heavy rainfall. This progress comes as the department anticipates a surge of 10 lakh commuters traveling to the Konkan region for the upcoming Ganeshotsav festival.
A senior official from the PWD noted that the completion rate could have reached 90% if not for the adverse weather conditions. To expedite the work, the department is employing steel slag, a new technology that allows for faster pothole sealing. This material, a byproduct of steel production, has previously been tested in states such as Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh.
Innovative Solutions for Road Safety
The PWD has implemented the use of steel slag at various locations along the Mumbai-Goa highway (NH-66). Officials highlighted its advantages, including a higher load-bearing capacity, improved skid resistance, and enhanced durability. These qualities significantly reduce the likelihood of potholes forming and lower maintenance costs in the long run.
The highway stretches for 460 km, with 84 km managed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the remainder under the PWD’s jurisdiction. Recent concerns regarding road safety intensified after a drone video showcased severe potholes on the Vashishti bridge in Chiplun, which went viral. In response to these concerns, the PWD confirmed that repairs to the bridge were conducted promptly.
To further manage traffic flow during the busy festival period, the Deputy Regional Transport Office (RTO) in Panvel has imposed restrictions on the movement of heavy vehicles exceeding 16 tonnes on designated festival days. This measure aims to alleviate congestion and ensure safer travel for all road users during the celebrations.
As the PWD continues its efforts to improve the Mumbai-Goa highway, commuters can expect enhanced travel conditions, particularly during this busy festive season. The department remains committed to maintaining road safety and accessibility for all.
