Netflix and AMC Theatres Forge New Partnership for KPop Demon Hunters
In a notable development, Netflix and AMC Theatres have taken a step toward collaboration by agreeing to screen the animated musical film KPop Demon Hunters in 300 locations across the United States. This partnership marks a significant shift in the relationship between the two companies, which have historically been at odds over exclusive theatrical release windows.
AMC’s decision to showcase Netflix’s re-release of KPop Demon Hunters during the Halloween weekend reflects a growing willingness to embrace collaboration, as the theater chain seeks to bolster its lineup with more profitable films. Until now, only one Netflix film, Glass Onion, directed by Rian Johnson, had been screened at AMC locations. The recent agreement showcases a newfound openness, as both companies explore opportunities for mutual benefit.
Shifting Strategies in Theatrical Releases
This collaboration comes as Netflix aims to enhance its theatrical presence, viewing cinema as a marketing tool rather than solely a revenue stream. According to Variety, Netflix’s strategy focuses on generating excitement among fans for its key properties. By partnering with AMC, Netflix can extend its reach and increase audience engagement with its films.
For AMC, these special events can provide additional revenue during traditionally slow periods. The theater chain has been adapting its approach, especially after losing significant projects like Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Wuthering Heights to Warner Bros. and talent such as the Duffer Brothers to Paramount. Future collaborations between AMC and Netflix may also include Greta Gerwig’s upcoming adaptation of Narnia, which is already set for a two-week exclusive IMAX run at AMC and other venues.
Netflix’s upcoming projects include David Fincher’s spin-off, Adventures of Cliff Booth, featuring Brad Pitt, which may see a more extensive theatrical rollout. However, the film Wake Up Dead Man will only receive an awards-qualifying run due to logistical challenges.
Industry Reactions and Future Outlook
Despite these changes, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos has emphasized that the company’s core strategy remains focused on providing exclusive first-run movies directly to its streaming platform. He has acknowledged that the perception of theatrical releases as outdated is not part of Netflix’s vision. Nevertheless, the broader Hollywood community appears to welcome Netflix’s recognition of the value of theatrical releases, provided it does not disrupt established operations.
Major distributors typically require theater chains to screen new releases extensively, but Netflix has shown flexibility in its scheduling. This adaptability could lead to a more harmonious relationship between streaming services and traditional theaters, as both seek to navigate the evolving landscape of film distribution.
As Netflix and AMC move forward with their collaboration, the industry will be watching closely to see how this partnership influences the future of theatrical releases and streaming services.
