Karnataka and GAIL Join Forces to Convert Wet Waste into Gas

The Karnataka government has entered into an agreement with the Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) to produce gas from wet waste in Bengaluru. On October 12, 2023, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar announced the initiative, marking a significant step towards tackling the city’s waste management challenges. The project involves the establishment of a facility with an investment of ₹123 crore dedicated to converting organic waste into usable energy.
The new plant will process up to 300 tonnes of wet waste daily, generating approximately 12 tonnes of compressed biogas and 21 tonnes of Fermented Organic Manure (FOM) each day. This development is expected to alleviate some of the waste problems that have long plagued Bengaluru, which struggles with increasing volumes of refuse.
According to Mr. Shivakumar, the state government has already allocated land for the project, emphasizing that this initiative represents the first of its kind in the city. He indicated the government’s readiness to expand efforts by signing additional agreements aimed at enhancing waste-to-energy projects.
The gas produced from this facility is intended for distribution to local industries and hotels, providing a dual benefit: addressing waste disposal issues while promoting sustainable energy practices. This initiative aligns with broader environmental goals and underscores Karnataka’s commitment to innovative waste management solutions.
As Bengaluru continues to grow, such projects will be crucial in managing urban waste effectively. The collaboration with GAIL sets a precedent for future ventures in renewable energy, potentially paving the way for more sustainable urban living in the region.
