Government Initiates Space Programme Debate as Parliament Faces Gridlock

The Monsoon Session of Parliament in India is set to resume on August 7, 2025, after a temporary break, with the government pushing for a debate on the nation’s space programme. This comes in the wake of ongoing interruptions and disputes regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The ruling party has opted to prioritize a discussion titled “Special Discussion on India’s First Astronaut Aboard the International Space Station – Critical Role of Space Programme for Viksit Bharat by 2047.”

The timing of this debate is significant, as it follows the return of astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla from the International Space Station. This move appears to be an attempt by the government to shift focus from the contentious electoral issues that have dominated recent sessions. The Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (I.N.D.I.A) bloc is actively campaigning with a “Voter Adhikar Yatra” in Bihar, highlighting the political tensions present in the current legislative environment.

On August 5, 2025, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) announced a parliamentary meeting scheduled for August 19, 2025, at 09:30 AM. According to an official notification issued by Dr. Shiv Shakti Nath Bakshi, Office Secretary of the NDA Parliamentary Party, all members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha from the NDA have been instructed to attend this crucial meeting.

In a related development, on August 6, leaders of the NDA unanimously passed a resolution empowering Prime Minister Narendra Modi and JP Nadda, BJP chief and Union Minister, to finalize the NDA’s candidate for the upcoming Vice-Presidential election on September 9, 2025. This decision follows the resignation of Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, 2025, who cited health issues in his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu.
