EU Reinforces Two-State Solution Support and Gaza Aid Initiatives

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed the European Union’s commitment to a two-state solution during her address at the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). In her remarks, she announced the establishment of a Palestine Donor Group aimed at supporting Palestine and facilitating the reconstruction of Gaza.

“We will set up a Palestine Donor Group,” von der Leyen stated. “Any future Palestinian state must be viable from an economic point of view. And we Europeans will set up a dedicated instrument for Gaza’s reconstruction. Gaza must be rebuilt.” She emphasized the importance of a two-state solution, saying, “When the night is darkest, we must hold fast to our compass, and our compass is the two-state solution.”

Von der Leyen highlighted Europe’s role in supporting the Palestinian Authority, asserting that “since the beginning of this war, Europe has been the lifeline of the Palestinian Authority.” She urged for collective action, stating, “But we must all do more, and this is why we will set up a Palestine donor group.”

The EU’s financial commitment aims to ensure a secure Israel alongside a viable Palestinian state, while addressing the ongoing challenges posed by Hamas. “The only realistic peace plan is based on two states,” von der Leyen asserted, calling for the removal of Hamas from the equation.

During a special session on the two-state solution at the UNGA, Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas addressed the assembly via video link. He warned Hamas and its factions to surrender their weapons to the Palestinian Authority, affirming that the state of Palestine is the only legitimate governing authority for Gaza. Abbas articulated a vision for a unified Palestinian state governed by a single law and security force, underscoring that “Hamas will have no role in governing.”

The session was co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, with French President Emmanuel Macron officially announcing France’s recognition of the state of Palestine. This recognition aligns with the broader objectives of the European Union and its commitment to fostering stability in the region.
