Tripura’s CM Manik Saha Highlights Development in Janajati Areas
Tripura’s Chief Minister, Manik Saha, emphasized the crucial role of Janajati areas in the state’s development during a recent event. He announced that over 40% of the budget for the financial year 2025-26 will be dedicated to these regions. Saha inaugurated several projects and distributed toolkits aimed at enhancing the livelihoods of skilled members of the Bru community.
Speaking at the State Level Toolkits Distribution Ceremony, Saha reiterated that the state’s advancement is contingent upon the progress of Janajati areas. “Without developing Janajati areas, Tripura cannot be developed,” he stated. The event also included the virtual inauguration of multiple facilities, such as the new building of Chawmanu Class XII School and a new fire station.
The Chief Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to empowering the Bru community through various initiatives. Under the Swabalamban Yojana, the government has initiated support programs, including the distribution of six autos, with a subsidy of Rs 1 lakh for each vehicle. Additionally, he noted the implementation of skill training programs through the PM Kaushalya Yojana and the Mukhyamantri Dakkhata Yojana.
During a visit by Union Home Minister Amit Shah to Bru camps, the focus was placed on not only providing housing and basic amenities but also ensuring skill development for sustainable income. “The Skill Development department is working tirelessly,” Saha affirmed, mentioning that training has been well received by the Bru community, which has expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the support.
For over two decades, issues faced by the Bru people had been largely ignored by political parties, according to Saha. He pointed out that since the formation of the BJP government in 2018, efforts have been made to address these challenges on humanitarian grounds. “Our government is with the people and working for their development,” he added.
The Chief Minister shared that 895 toolkits and 200 driving licenses have been issued, with a total expenditure of Rs 1.45 crore. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance economic and social development in the region, with a strong emphasis on self-reliance and employment generation.
Under the Tripura Skill and Entrepreneurship Policy 2024, which was launched last year, approximately 35,000 new candidates are currently undergoing training in fields such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, IT services, and healthcare. Saha noted that the state is also facilitating opportunities abroad, with skilled workers being sent to Japan. “Five youths have already been sent, and four more will follow soon,” he mentioned, asserting the government’s commitment to skill enhancement.
The budget for the financial year 2024-25 was announced at over Rs 27,000 crore, with a committed expenditure of Rs 17,014 crore. Of this, approximately Rs 6,645 crore, or around 39.06%, was allocated for the development of Janajati areas. For the upcoming financial year, Saha confirmed that more than 40% of the budget will again be focused on improving infrastructure, education, and healthcare in these regions.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Santana Chakma, Minister of Industries and Commerce, and Sambhu Lal Chakma, MLA. They collectively underscored the importance of these initiatives in fostering a more inclusive and prosperous state.
