Indian Professionals Avoid Mental Health Talks at Work, Survey Reveals

A recent report has revealed that Indian professionals remain reluctant to engage in conversations about mental health at work due to concerns over being perceived as incapable. This finding comes on the heels of World Mental Health Day, observed annually on October 10, which aims to raise awareness about mental well-being and combat the stigma surrounding it. The survey, conducted by job portal Naukri, included responses from 19,650 job seekers across various sectors.

The data indicates that 31 percent of employees fear discussing mental health issues, worried it might lead to judgments about their capabilities. Additionally, nearly 30 percent expressed concerns about being viewed negatively by colleagues, while 21 percent felt it could result in being dismissed as someone who makes excuses. Another 21 percent believed that discussing mental health could adversely affect their career advancement.

Despite the growing recognition of mental health’s importance, about three-quarters of Indian professionals are hesitant to disclose the reasons for taking time off related to mental health. Close to 45 percent of employees reported they would choose to mark such absences as general sick leave instead. Only 28 percent felt comfortable being explicit about their mental health needs. Alarmingly, 20 percent indicated they would avoid taking leave altogether, while 9 percent admitted they would fabricate an excuse.

Workplace Factors Impacting Mental Health

The report highlights that a poor work-life balance is the leading factor affecting mental health in the workplace, cited by 39 percent of respondents. Other significant contributors include micromanaging bosses, with 30 percent citing this as a concern, a lack of recognition at 22 percent, and the fear of making mistakes at 10 percent.

Interestingly, there are differences across sectors regarding the impact on mental well-being. In the pharmaceutical sector, more than one in four professionals reported a lack of recognition as detrimental to their mental health. In contrast, those in Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO) and research roles identified micromanagement as the primary issue, affecting 33 percent. In the design and hospitality sectors, stigma around mental health remains a significant barrier, with approximately 28 percent stating they would avoid taking leave entirely rather than discuss their mental health.

On a more positive note, the Banking, Financial Services, and Insurance (BFSI) sector appears to be more receptive to mental health discussions, with over 30 percent of employees willing to disclose mental health issues when necessary.

Demand for Workplace Support

The survey also revealed a strong demand for supportive workplace measures. A notable 60 percent of respondents emphasized the need for flexible work options to help manage mental health. Other suggestions included stress-management workshops, supported by 22 percent, the introduction of paid mental health days, advocated by 10 percent, and managerial training programs, which 9 percent supported.

These findings underscore the urgent need for organizations in India to foster an environment where mental health conversations are normalized and supported. Addressing these issues could not only improve employee well-being but also enhance overall workplace productivity and morale.
