Delhi Police Arrests Con Artists for Duping Aspiring Actors
Delhi Police have apprehended a pair of con artists accused of defrauding aspiring actors by impersonating television producers and directors. The suspects, Tarun Shekhar Sharma, a 32-year-old from Lucknow, and Asha Singh, also known as Bhawna, a 29-year-old resident of Delhi, are linked to over 20 similar complaints nationwide, according to Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Amit Goel.
The duo allegedly targeted individuals on social media, enticing them with offers for roles in popular television series and streaming shows. In one notable case, an aspiring actress lost Rs 24 lakh after responding to a post from the self-identified producers. The complainant was led to believe she would receive a role in a TV show and was subsequently asked to pay various fees for processing and membership. Following the transfer of funds, she found herself unable to contact them, as they had blocked her on social media.
Police investigations tracked the suspects to a rented apartment in Bengaluru, where they were arrested. Authorities seized a range of items, including seven mobile phones, ten SIM cards, 15 bank cheque books, eight ATM cards, and a pair of gold earrings. The investigation revealed that the pair frequently relocated to evade capture, often staying in luxury accommodations and maintaining a high standard of living.
Modus Operandi and Wider Impact
According to DCP Goel, Sharma and Singh operated with sophistication, opening around 15 bank accounts and using multiple SIM cards registered in various states. The accused reportedly even trained themselves through online videos to refine their fraudulent tactics.
The couple is also wanted for similar fraud cases in Jammu and Kashmir, and their operations have been linked to similar scams in Uttar Pradesh and Delhi. The police are continuing to investigate the extent of their activities, with a focus on identifying additional victims who may have fallen prey to their schemes.
Authorities urge individuals pursuing careers in the entertainment industry to exercise caution, especially when approached by unknown entities offering roles or auditions. The police emphasize the importance of verifying the credentials of such individuals before engaging or transferring any money.
