Devang Gandhi Highlights India’s Batting Challenges Ahead of Tests
As the Indian cricket team prepares for its Test series against South Africa, former player and selector Devang Gandhi has raised concerns about the depth of the batting lineup. With the first Test commencing on November 14, 2025, at Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Gandhi emphasized the challenges faced by the team during a significant transition period.
The Indian batting unit is still finding its footing after successful tours against England and the West Indies. While there is a degree of clarity regarding most positions, uncertainty lingers, particularly concerning the crucial No. 3 spot. Following the retirement of Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill has moved to No. 4, leaving a gap that both Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan have been tested for. The selectors have opted for Sudharsan as a long-term prospect, but his performance has been underwhelming, with only 273 runs from his first five Tests at an average of 30.33.
Other contenders for the batting order include Dhruv Jurel and Devdutt Padikkal. Gandhi pointed out that there is potential for Jurel to play as a specialist batter in the playing XI, even after the anticipated return of Rishabh Pant. Both Sudharsan and Padikkal have struggled to make a significant impact, raising questions about their selection.
Padikkal, who was called up for the home series against the West Indies, did not get the chance to play as the team opted for Nitish Kumar Reddy in a surprising combination. Despite showing promise in his recent performances for Karnataka, including a century against Australia ‘A’ in September, Padikkal had a disappointing outing in the recent series against South Africa ‘A’, scoring just 40 runs in two matches.
In contrast, Jurel has been in excellent form. After scoring his maiden Test century during the home series against the West Indies, he continued his prolific run with two centuries in the second unofficial Test against South Africa ‘A’ in Bengaluru. His impressive performance has led to calls for his inclusion in the playing XI, primarily as a specialist batter.
Former wicket-keeper Deep Dasgupta supports the idea of including Jurel but acknowledges that he might need to bat lower in the order. As the team gears up for the upcoming Test series, the selectors face critical decisions about the batting lineup, which could significantly influence the outcome against South Africa.
With the first Test just days away, all eyes will be on how the Indian team navigates these challenges and whether they can solidify their batting order in this pivotal phase.
