A’ja Wilson’s Dominance: Ranking Her Four WNBA MVP Seasons

A’ja Wilson of the Las Vegas Aces continues to elevate her game, securing her fourth WNBA MVP award in a remarkable career. Her coach, Becky Hammon, expressed concern over the potential for “voter fatigue” affecting Wilson’s future chances, emphasizing the importance of recognizing her consistent excellence on the court. “I just don’t want people to keep moving the bar on A’ja,” she told ESPN. “What you’re watching is amazing.”
This season, Wilson received 51 out of 72 first-place votes, reaffirming her status as one of the league’s elite players. With four MVP awards in just eight seasons, she has accomplished a remarkable feat. Each of her MVP seasons showcases her evolution and impact on the game.
2024: A Unanimous Choice
Wilson’s most recent MVP award in 2024 was historic, as she became only the second player in WNBA history to receive every first-place vote, matching Cynthia Cooper‘s unanimous selection in 1997. She averaged a league-leading 26.9 points, 11.9 rebounds, and 2.6 blocks per game. Her performance was particularly impressive following a close loss to Breanna Stewart for the MVP title in 2023, where she finished third overall.
Despite the Aces’ elimination by the New York Liberty in the semifinals, Wilson’s individual statistics positioned her as a standout player for the season. Her dominance on the court set her apart, demonstrating her ability to rise above challenges and expectations.
2025: Finishing Strong
The 2025 season showcased Wilson’s resilience as she led the Aces to a remarkable turnaround from a 14-14 record to a 16-game winning streak. Averaging 23.4 points and 10.2 rebounds, Wilson made history as the first player to average at least 20 points and 10 rebounds in multiple seasons. Her efforts earned her co-Defensive Player of the Year honors alongside Minnesota’s Alanna Smith.
Wilson’s drive to improve remains evident. “I just want to be the best for my team,” she stated. “I don’t want to leave any questions or asterisks.”
2022: MVP and Championship Glory
In a competitive 2022 MVP race, Wilson edged out Stewart with 31 first-place votes compared to Stewart’s 23. That season marked Hammon’s first as head coach, and her support for Wilson was clear. “You could make a really good argument for Stewie to win it,” Hammon remarked, noting the closeness of the race.
Wilson not only captured the MVP title but also led the Aces to their first championship, averaging 19.5 points and 9.4 rebounds during the regular season. The Aces triumphed over the Connecticut Sun in the WNBA Finals, solidifying Wilson’s status as a key player in the league.
2020: The Breakthrough Season
Wilson’s rise began in 2020, when she secured the MVP award with 43 of 47 first-place votes. In a season impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic, she averaged 20.5 points, 8.5 rebounds, and 2.0 blocks while leading the Aces through a challenging environment. However, despite her regular-season success, the Seattle Storm swept the Aces in the Finals, leaving Wilson with a bittersweet taste in her mouth.
Notably, Wilson did not attempt a three-pointer during that season, a stark contrast to her subsequent performances, where she showcased her evolving skill set.
Each of Wilson’s MVP seasons reflects not only her individual achievements but also her relentless pursuit of excellence in the WNBA. As the league continues to grow, Wilson’s impact remains a significant driving force, inspiring both fans and fellow players alike.
