Rajnath Singh Criticizes Opposition’s Disruption in Lok Sabha
In a display of political tension, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh criticized the Opposition for its disruptive protests during a Lok Sabha discussion on Shubhanshu Shukla, India’s first astronaut to travel to the International Space Station. The session on October 23, 2023, was adjourned due to vociferous opposition, which stemmed from concerns regarding the Special Intensive Review of electoral rolls by the Election Commission in Bihar.
Singh expressed disappointment over the Opposition’s actions, stating that they should have prioritized national pride and achievements during a discussion centered on the country’s advancements in space exploration. In a post on social media platform X, he lamented, “It was very unfortunate the way the Opposition created a ruckus in the House and did not allow it to function.” He emphasized that the topic at hand was not merely political but pivotal for India’s future, linking it to the nation’s ambitions for a developed Bharat by 2047.
The Defence Minister underscored the critical role of India’s space program in enhancing both scientific development and national security. He remarked that the achievements in this sector under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi are unprecedented. Singh further highlighted that this moment should have fostered constructive dialogue, allowing the Opposition to contribute meaningful critiques and suggestions rather than resorting to protests.
The discussion, initiated by Union Minister Jitendra Singh, also aimed to outline India’s vision for space exploration, including a planned lunar landing by an Indian astronaut in 2040. Despite the protests, Singh attempted to convey the significance of these developments for India’s strategic interests in the 21st century.
The current session of Parliament has been marred by disruptions, with the Monsoon session witnessing limited official business. Aside from the brief two-day discussion on Operation Sindoor, the ongoing protests have hindered legislative proceedings. Singh’s remarks reflect a growing frustration within the ruling party regarding the lack of cooperation from opposition parties during discussions on critical national issues.
As the political landscape remains contentious, Singh’s call for unity on matters of national pride highlights the ongoing struggle between governance and partisan politics. The events in the Lok Sabha serve as a reminder of the challenges facing India in balancing political discourse with national advancement.
