NGRI Finalizes 3D Mapping for SLBC Tunnel Project Resumption
The National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) is nearing the completion of its helicopter-borne electromagnetic survey for the Srisailam Left Bank Canal Tunnel Project (SLBC). This survey aims to produce a detailed 3D map that will be submitted to the government by the end of the month, providing essential data to facilitate the resumption of construction.
Located in Hyderabad, the SLBC Tunnel Project spans a total of 43.39 kilometers underground, of which 33.59 kilometers have already been constructed using Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) technology. With 9.8 kilometers remaining, the government has revised its strategy to ensure the project reaches completion within the next two years.
The NGRI officials confirmed that the forthcoming report, featuring high-resolution 3D visualizations, is set to be finalized shortly. This data will not only aid in mapping rock formations but will also contribute to optimizing the tunnel’s alignment, thereby minimizing risks and enhancing efficiency.
Environmental Considerations and Safety Measures
The development of the SLBC tunnel is particularly sensitive due to its location within the biodiversity-rich Nallamala Tiger Reserve. Authorities have emphasized the importance of balancing progress with environmental preservation. To advance construction without impacting the nearby Amrabad Tiger Reserve, officials plan to implement controlled blasting techniques that will minimize vibrations and avoid habitat disruption.
Irrigation officials noted, “This is not just about mapping rock formations. It is more about the tunnel’s alignment minimizing risks while maximizing efficiency.” The 3D model generated from the survey will play a critical role in guiding the final phase of the project, integrating precision engineering with real-time environmental safeguards.
Resuming Construction After Tragedy
The SLBC tunnel project faced a significant setback on February 22, 2023, when a roof collapse resulted in the deaths of two workers, with six others reported missing. A rescue mission that lasted over two months failed to locate the missing individuals. As the NGRI report reaches the government, new plans will be introduced to ensure construction can safely resume.
The ongoing efforts to complete the SLBC tunnel are a testament to the commitment of the authorities to enhance regional irrigation while safeguarding ecological integrity. The anticipated 3D mapping will pave the way for a careful and informed approach to resuming this vital infrastructure project.
