KL University Students Launch Three Satellites, Advancing Space Research

Students at KL University successfully launched three satellites on October 14, 2023, marking a significant achievement in space research. The launch took place at the university’s Vaddeswaram campus, located near Tadepalli in the Guntur district of India. A team of thirty-four students from the Electronics and Communication Engineering (ECE) Department led the project, supported by faculty members CH Kavya and K Sarathkumar. The cricket ground at the Greenfield campus served as the launchpad for this ambitious endeavor.

The event was attended by Union Minister Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma, who highlighted the importance of such initiatives in fostering innovation and scientific inquiry among students. This launch illustrates how Indian universities are increasingly participating in space research and satellite technology, empowering students to engage in meaningful scientific projects.

Innovative Satellites with Diverse Objectives

Each satellite launched possesses distinct features and aims to advance research in various fields, particularly environmental monitoring. One of the key satellites, known as the KL JAC, is designed as a credit card-sized pico balloon model. Its primary goal is to remain in the troposphere for three months, collecting real-time data for air quality research and testing telemetry systems. Through this project, students gain invaluable hands-on experience in satellite communications and atmospheric research.

The second satellite, KLSAT-2, focuses on gathering detailed environmental data. Equipped with an onboard spectrometer, it utilizes a hybrid Aeroswift VTOL flight module, launched with drone assistance. This satellite enhances the study of climate, pollution, and atmospheric parameters, creating a versatile platform for a broad spectrum of scientific experiments.

Lastly, the CONSAT mini satellite aims to investigate weather patterns and air quality in Andhra Pradesh. This initiative is part of a competition organized by Inspace, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), and the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Center (ASI). The development of CONSAT aligns with national objectives such as the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives, promoting indigenous satellite technology.
