Aditya Aluminium Launches Odisha’s First 200 KLD ZLD Plant
Aditya Aluminium, a subsidiary of Hindalco Industries Limited, has marked a significant achievement in sustainability by commissioning Odisha’s first 200 KLD Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) plant at its facility in Sambalpur. This groundbreaking plant utilizes advanced Mechanical Vapour Recompression (MVR) technology, allowing the complete recycling and reuse of industrial effluents, ensuring that no liquid waste is discharged outside the plant.
The MVR system operates by evaporating and condensing wastewater, effectively using recycled steam energy. This innovative process recovers approximately 90–95 percent of clean water for reuse, which substantially reduces freshwater consumption and meets stringent ZLD regulations. Built with an investment of around Rs 20 crore, this facility exemplifies Hindalco’s commitment to sustainability and resource efficiency, contributing to a circular economy.
Commitment to Sustainable Practices
The inauguration of the plant was attended by key officials from the Odisha State Pollution Control Board (OSPCB), including Uma Nanduri, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Kendu Leaves) and Member Secretary of OSPCB; Sudarsan Behera, Conservator of Forests in Sambalpur; and Dr. S.N. Nanda, Regional Officer of the State Pollution Control Board. Senior executives from Aditya Aluminium, led by Unit Head J.P. Nayak, were also present during the ceremony.
With this commissioning, Aditya Aluminium positions itself as a pioneer within Odisha’s industrial landscape by adopting a modular MVR-based ZLD system. This not only sets a new benchmark for sustainable and responsible practices in the aluminium industry but also aligns with the company’s broader aim of achieving water positivity across its operations.
The introduction of this ZLD plant is a crucial step towards addressing the challenges of water scarcity and environmental sustainability. As industries face increasing scrutiny over their ecological footprint, initiatives like this highlight the potential for innovative technologies to drive significant changes in operational practices.
Aditya Aluminium’s investment in this advanced facility reflects a growing recognition of the need for industries to adopt sustainable practices that not only comply with regulations but also contribute positively to the environment. By leading the way in Odisha, the company hopes to inspire others in the sector to follow suit, fostering a culture of sustainability that benefits both the economy and the ecosystem.
