Bengaluru Sets November Deadline to Eliminate Potholes
Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister, DK Shivakumar, has set a definitive deadline for contractors to address the pervasive issue of potholes in Bengaluru. The target is to complete the repairs by November, a move aimed at ensuring smoother and safer travel for the city’s commuters. This announcement, made on Wednesday, underscores the government’s commitment to improving road conditions in the region.
Shivakumar, who also oversees the Bengaluru Development portfolio, emphasized that the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) is prioritizing road repairs. He stated, “Contractors have been given a final deadline to fill the potholes within November to resolve the problem. Since a clean Bengaluru and smooth traffic are our goals, GBA will provide relief from potholes as soon as possible.”
The Deputy Chief Minister assured that significant attention is being directed toward the city’s roads. He mentioned that funds are already allocated, and contractors have begun their work under strict timelines. “We are committed to providing our people with safer and smoother travel,” he added.
Funding and Industry Concerns
Earlier in the month, on September 14, 2023, Shivakumar announced a substantial road development initiative, with a budget of ₹ 1,100 crore allocated for both repairs and new construction projects. The urgency of this initiative has been echoed by the Greater Bengaluru IT Companies & Industries Association (GBITCIA), which has called on the government for immediate action. They are advocating for a transparent roadmap that includes road repairs, upgrades to public transport, and enhanced governance.
General Secretary Krishna Kumar Gowda highlighted the importance of reliable infrastructure for Bengaluru’s status as India’s tech capital. He noted that the recent decision by logistics firm BlackBuck to relocate from the Outer Ring Road (ORR) serves as a critical wake-up call regarding the need for robust infrastructure.
Civic Inspections and Accountability
In a related effort, Rajendra Cholan, the Commissioner of Bengaluru Central City Corporation, conducted inspections in CV Raman Nagar on the same day. During these inspections, he identified several civic issues, including roads riddled with potholes, damaged footpaths, and ineffective solid waste management.
Cholan expressed concern over these ongoing problems and indicated that engineers and officials who fail to fulfill their responsibilities will face strict disciplinary measures, including suspension. He also instructed that notices be issued to landowners of vacant plots filled with garbage, particularly on Jeevan Bima Nagar Main Road.
The concerted efforts from both the state government and local authorities underline a proactive approach to tackling Bengaluru’s infrastructure challenges, with the November deadline serving as a crucial milestone for the city’s commuters.
